Accident details

During low-altitude training, the helicopter struck a power line while attempting to regain control and fell onto the road, hitting a car.

The car sustained significant damage. Police and paramedics arrived at the scene near Bankstown Airport around 1:30 PM on Friday.

The 62-year-old instructor died at the scene, while the 19-year-old pilot suffered serious injuries.

Eyewitness accounts

An eyewitness to the accident reported hearing a loud bang and rushing to help. He remarked:

People started running, some screaming and looking up. It might have been the result of an explosion.

ATSB head Angus Mitchell stated that it is too early to speak about the causes of the accident:

We know that training usually takes place at altitudes of 800 to 1000 feet. But until we receive data to confirm, I wouldn't want to speculate on this.

The ambulance chief, Audi Jusif, noted that the pilot had a spinal injury and a jaw fracture, emphasizing the bravery of those who came to help in critical moments, which he believed may have saved his life.
