How to Bring Back Creativity in Adult Life: 3 Simple Steps.
According to Vox: Perhaps you no longer consider yourself a creative person, but you probably once were one. One of the blessings of childhood is the freedom to play and create; art lessons, recess, and music classes open up worlds of limitless imagination and self-expression. Yet at some point, play and creativity begin to be perceived as something childish. In this context, Cas Holman, a toy designer and author of the book Playful: How Play Shifts Our Thinking, Inspires Connection, and Sparks Creativity, notes that we stop playing. We focus on activities that bring success or money rather than those that bring joy.
As adult responsibilities grow, even leisure time is often spent not on creativity, but on relaxation or entertainment. However, amid this hustle and bustle, a desire may arise to find more tactile, creative ways of self-expression — ones that help you detach from news, screens, and daily chores and return to your playful side.
Creativity Can Enrich Other Areas of Life
These activities are not only enjoyable, but filling your free time with creativity can make you more creative in other aspects of life. As Zorana Ivcevic Pringle, a senior researcher at the Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence and author of the book The Creativity Choice: The Science of Making Decisions to Turn Ideas Into Action, claims, unstructured and exploratory thinking that develops during hobbies can positively impact other areas. For example, unconventional approaches at work can lead to new ideas.
1. Tap into Your History and Interests
One of the biggest threats to a new creative habit is dwindling motivation. Initially, the enthusiasm is high, but it may decrease over time. However, engaging in what you truly enjoy (or enjoyed) can help maintain that motivation. 'Anything that makes the engagement more fun usually makes you more motivated to continue,' says Katie Milkman, a professor at the Wharton School and author of the book How to Change: The Science of Getting From Where You Are to Where You Want to Be.
Use memories of how you played as a child to recreate those same emotions in adult life. For example, if you sang in the school choir, you don't have to join a local a cappella group, but you can sing in the shower, in the car, or at karaoke.
You don’t have to join a local a cappella group, but you could try singing in the shower, in the car, or at karaoke.
Adding elements of play to your activities can make you more dedicated to the task. This might include participating in a 30-day knitting challenge or little rewards you receive after each journal entry.
2. Keep the Burden Low
Parents or people juggling multiple jobs may not have the bandwidth for large creative hobbies. But even in the toughest times, playfulness can be expressed. Remember people you met along your way or try to imagine their fascinating stories. After dinner, when you're done eating, grab a piece of paper and draw.
If you’re returning to an old hobby, don’t strive for perfection. It can be demoralizing when you pick up the guitar again and realize you need time to master it. But over time, you will gain confidence and improve at your craft.
3. Share Your Creations, Instead of Monetizing Them
In today's world, where consumer culture prevails, many people are tempted to turn hobbies into businesses. But instead, you might simply gift your drawings to friends and family.
Using a hobby as a side hustle can actually stifle creativity, Pringle notes.
To invite creativity into your life, less restriction and fewer rules are needed. Strive to free yourself from the pressure associated with 'I must' or 'right' ways to play.
'Play is not something you have to be good at. It’s not another thing you need to master, another reward,' says Holman. 'Play can be in everything you do, and it will actually make you happier in everything because you will be yourself.'
