EDF gives customers up to 16 hours of free energy: how to get it

EDF customers can receive free electricity by reducing their consumption during the week.

This initiative is called Sunday Saver and aims to encourage households to save energy every month.

If you reduce consumption during peak hours from 4 PM to 7 PM from Monday to Friday, you could get up to 16 hours of free electricity the following Sunday.

EDF will take your usual energy usage during these hours and establish it as your "baseline." The amount of free electricity you receive will depend on your consumption compared to this baseline.

  • Reducing consumption by 5% will earn you 4 hours of free electricity.
  • A 20% reduction will give you 8 free hours.
  • Reducing by 35% will earn you 12 hours of free electricity.
  • Halving your consumption will give you 16 hours of free electricity.

To join the program, you must be an EDF customer and have a smart meter installed.

You must also be over 18 years old and live in England, Scotland, or Wales. Your smart meter must be set up to transmit readings every half hour, and your tariff should not have more than two pricing options.

EDF assures that this initiative will help relieve the electricity grid during peak hours and contribute to the country's transition to clean energy.

How to get involved?

Monthly challenges from EDF start on the first Monday of the month, so it is important to register in advance. If you do not register, you will not be able to participate in the current Sunday Saver challenge.

However, you can already sign up for the October challenge using the link in your EDF account.

How to receive free electricity?

Once registered for the challenge, you will not need to do anything additional to receive free electricity, except for reducing your consumption.

All free electricity will automatically be credited to your account.

While you will not be able to cash it out, this discount will help reduce your electricity bill.

You can track how much free electricity you have earned through the Energy Hub.

The time to use the free electricity on Sunday will depend on the amount of electricity you have earned.

EDF reported that its customers have already earned 6.2 million hours of free electricity.

Ways to reduce electricity consumption

EDF has shared some useful tips on how to lower electricity consumption during peak hours.

  • Run the dishwasher late in the evening after 7 PM.
  • It is also advisable to use the washing machine and dryer at this time or after breakfast.
  • On hot and dry days, hang clothes outside to dry.
  • Turn off devices and chargers between 4 PM and 7 PM to save electricity.
  • Even in standby mode, these devices consume energy.
  • Prepare meals in advance on weekends to save energy and time.
  • If you have an electric car, try to charge it during off-peak hours.

This initiative by EDF aims not only at energy savings for consumers but also at the sustainable development of the energy sector, encouraging the population to use resources rationally. The successful implementation of the program could significantly reduce the burden on the energy system during challenging periods and promote the overall transition of the country towards greater energy independence and environmental awareness.
