Problems Transitioning to Universal Credit

According to The Sun: Barry Knight from Wales shared his difficulties related to the transition to Universal Credit. He and his wife had been receiving working tax credits for the past 15 years. In October 2023, they received a letter informing them that they needed to switch to Universal Credit.

The letter stated that they had three months to apply for Universal Credit. If they did not do this, their payments would be stopped as part of a process known as controlled migration.

They filled out applications in January 2024 but were still receiving working tax credits. Later, they were informed that they needed to attend several meetings at the Job Centre before their application could be processed.

However, Barry could not attend these meetings as they were scheduled during his working hours. In May this year, their tax credits were stopped, and they were sent a demand to repay £2,124, which, according to the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP), they had been overpaid.

“You were no longer entitled to tax credits as of January, so the DWP demanded the repayment of the overpaid money.”

DWP is transitioning millions of people from one of six old types of benefits to Universal Credit through a controlled migration process. More than two million people have received a similar letter from DWP stating that their payments will stop in April 2025.

To continue receiving financial support, they needed to apply for universal credit by the deadline mentioned in the letter. They also had to attend meetings at their local Job Centre for identity and fraud checks.

“Do not ignore letters from DWP.”

HM Revenue and Customs has already offered Barry £50 as a goodwill gesture for the inconvenience he experienced and provided a repayment plan. If you receive a letter from DWP, do not ignore it, as those who voluntarily transition to Universal Credit and face financial losses may receive transitional protection so that their payments are not reduced immediately.

However, if you miss the deadline and apply later, the possibility of receiving this protection may be lost.

The Citizens Advice organization can help you prepare your application for assistance. You can also use the benefits calculator to check your eligibility for Universal Credit and find out how much you may receive.

This situation illustrates how important it is to respond promptly to changes in the social assistance system. It is crucial to keep an eye out for letters from the DWP and respond to them in a timely manner, as delays can lead to a loss of financial support, which is critical for many.

As they transition to the new system of assistance, citizens should be particularly attentive to all requirements and deadlines to avoid unforeseen situations, as experienced by Barry Knight.
