A journalist tackled the legendary golf course Bethpage Black: what awaits the players of the Ryder Cup.
According to The Sun: WORLD NEWS: The Bethpage Black course is indeed very challenging.
This is especially felt if you are a tall golfer like me and don't feel confident playing without a warm-up next to a Ryder Cup hero.
Joshua Jones from SunSport decided to test his skills on the Bethpage Black simulator JJ learned how challenging the Ryder Cup will be for Team Europe and Team USA
And JJ didn't feel good when golf legend David Howell confirmed that it was even worse
Rory McIlroy and others hope to play significantly better
An unpredictable test for the players
Teams Europe and the USA are preparing to play on this famous and challenging course on Long Island. SunSport wanted to find out what challenges the best players in the world will face.
The result was simple and clear — disgraceful, and I have serious doubts about whether I should be here in New York playing the role of reporter covering this thrilling Ryder Cup.
The debate over the ambiguous choice of venue for the upcoming Ryder Cup has been heated — concerning both the location in New York and the course itself.
Two years after Europe's victory in Rome, Bethpage Black will become an exciting arena for the 45th edition of one of the biggest battles in sport.
This course, which has hosted three Majors, is extremely famous. Remarkably, it is a public golf club where hundreds of people come before dawn to get a chance to play.
There are five courses in the complex, but Bethpage Black is the toughest of them all, so much so that there is a famous warning that it is 'extremely difficult, recommended only for experienced players.'
But I didn’t listen to that and headed to Pitch Soho — a trendy bar equipped with golf simulators.
I was also lucky because my caddy was two-time Ryder Cup winner David Howell.
Unsuccessful execution
On the second hole, which is 389 yards long, I was confident I could show a decent game, hoping for a few successful shots.
However, reality turned out to be completely different.
My knees were shaking — I usually play with a three-iron from the tee, and I typically leave the driver in the bag.
But encouraged by David, I dared to take a big swing.
In my imagination, I made a gorgeous shot of 310 yards down the middle of the fairway.
In reality, I hit the trees with a poor shot.
Forget about the nice curve, it was a shot that a Domino’s pizza would envy. Unpleasant.
On the way to par
Next, I tried to reach the ball from 100 yards in great haste, and it led to new failures as I got stuck in the 'rough'.
David laughed when I couldn't lift the ball more than six feet off the ground.
When I was at my third shot, he noted:
“This ball should go up in the air.”
I listened to him, but the ball flew back into the trees and landed next to a tree, continuing my unique approach.
In the end, I desperately tried to execute a par from 100 yards, but my ball took a completely different path than I had hoped.
Fortunately, the simulator decided not to humiliate me further and finished the game itself, announcing me 'square bogey 8'.
The only positive side was that the terrible experience lasted only a few minutes.
Attempts in reality
David emphasized that the Ryder Cup is a golf match, and I probably lost this hole.
He shook his head and remarked:
“I don't think you could have done anything worse.”
Luke Donald hopes that players like Bryson DeChambeau and Scottie Scheffler will face similar difficulties on the real second hole of Bethpage Black.
But I think they will show significantly better results.
Bryson DeChambeau cannot play worse than JJ
Scottie Scheffler for Team USA also cannot play worse
Teams Europe and the USA are preparing for an important battle at the Ryder Cup, which will take place on the unique Bethpage Black course. This golf club is not only famous for its challenges but also for its history of hosting great tournaments.
