Mark Clattenburg on the incident with Mourinho: how the referee threw a boot at the legendary coach.
Conflict with José Mourinho
According to The Sun: Former Premier League referee Mark Clattenburg astonished the football audience with memories of a time when he once threw a boot at the famous coach José Mourinho during a heated argument.
Clattenburg summed up his 23-year career during which he refereed 297 matches in the Premier League.
GettyThe experienced referee admitted that he couldn't contain his emotions during the argument with Mourinho, one of modern football's most renowned coaches.
In the Whistleblowers podcast, Clattenburg recounted:
“He thought I missed a penalty for Ryan Shawcross' handball. He insisted it was a penalty and asked, 'Did you see it on replay?' I replied 'yes', and then just shot my boot in his direction out of anger. I, of course, missed. He went pale, didn't know what to say, and left the dressing room. When I got home, I looked at the incident, and he didn't hold the ball. It was just a mind game, bitterness, and rage.'
Clattenburg also noted that the relationship between him and Mourinho changed from the time he was working at Chelsea, where he expressed his unique charm.
This incident likely occurred during a match between Stoke and Manchester United, shortly before Clattenburg left refereeing. It is also important to note that José managed not only Chelsea but also Tottenham during his time in England.

Despite the conflict, Clattenburg and Mourinho seem to have found common ground and mutual respect, which is important for the development of the sport as a whole.
