Bartender stole millions due to ATM error: how he was caught

According to The Sun: The bartender, who was living large after an accidental coincidence at an ATM, sending himself millions of pounds, stated that he does not regret it. He was only arrested after confessing.

Dan Sounders was on holiday with a friend in Wangaratta, Australia, when he attempted to transfer $200 (approximately £96) from a credit card to an account to pay for entry into a bar.

Unexpectedly for him, the ATM malfunctioned, returned his card, and credited money to the checking account without changing the balance of the credit card.

In the following four months, he spent $1.6 million (about £775,000) on private jets, luxury hotels, and parties, living off the bank's funds.

Despite later recounting his adventures, serving his time, and now helping others, Dan still nostalgically recalls those unforgettable months.

“It was like Christmas. It felt amazing,”

said Dan Sounders.

Using the ATM glitch, he conducted transactions at night when he could transfer six-figure sums, despite the $2,000 card limit.

Since the bank couldn’t recall the funds within 24 hours, Dan had the opportunity to send himself money again the next night to avoid overdraft.

The Road to Luxury

Initially, he spent small amounts on taxis and random gifts, but after losing his job and girlfriend, Dan moved from Wangaratta to Melbourne.

Soon his life changed.

“It was a life experience in presidential suites, a lot of friends that I might not remember anymore, countless parties, table service, and lots of drinks,”

recalled Dan.

He calculated that he spent $1.6 million, and at one point, he had up to $5 million (around £2.4 million) in his account.

What Happened Next

Dan remembers that four months later, he approached the bank to confess.

“The bank said I was in great danger, and the matter was referred to the police,”

Dan shared.

Although he could have avoided arrest if he had stayed under the radar, Dan decided to address the situation and confessed publicly.

As a result, he was arrested and in 2015, he received a year in prison.

Today, 44-year-old Dan has no regrets; he dedicates his efforts to helping people with gambling problems and works with charities.

“I am involved in the most meaningful cause in my life, and I would never have achieved this if I hadn’t gone through all those trials with the bank and gambling,”

concluded Dan.
