Expert tested cocktail sausages: which supermarkets are tastier

Cocktail sausages are always a good choice for picnics and are often a favorite treat for children who can't get enough of this tasty snack, whether served hot or cold.

Mini-sausages likely originated in America in the late 19th or early 20th century and are now often served with a dollop of ketchup.

Sainsbury's 20 cocktail sausages

  • £1.50, .75p per sausage
  • Per 100g: calories: 312 fats: 22.4g sugar: 1.3g salt: 1.27g

These sausages from Sainsbury's were declared the winner.

They were quite small at Sainsbury's, but perfectly shaped and incredibly appetizing – I could happily snack on them all afternoon. They were well-cooked without excessive spiciness and sufficient to satisfy four or five people during a picnic. My favorite, for sure.

Waitrose 20 pork sausages

  • £3.25, 16p per sausage
  • Per 100g: calories: 217 fats: 20.1g sugar: 1.8g salt: 1.08g

The sausages were the largest, so you won't need many to fill up. They were soft and satisfying – you could taste the onion and other spices, but it wasn't overpowering. However, they were also considerably more expensive than others I tried – and I'm not sure the extra cost is justified.

At picnics or parties, cocktail sausages will always be a good choice for a snack. Comparing two popular options from the Sainsbury's and Waitrose supermarkets helped determine which sausage might be the better alternative for you – whether in taste or price.
