Levi's to Cut 200 Jobs in Britain: Reasons for the Decision.
Job Reductions at the Levi's Brand
According to The Sun: The legendary fashion brand Levi's, which has 71 stores in the UK, has cut 200 jobs.
These cuts occurred despite the brand recording an increase in profits and sales last year.
AlamyThe American company Levi's, founded in 1853, reduced the number of employees in its Northampton office from 1,857 to 1,630 over the year ending November 30, 2024.
However, pre-tax profit during this period rose from £7.7 million to £9.5 million, while sales increased from £89 million to £96.8 million.
“Service levels have improved, and customer confidence is expected to rise in 2025,” says the board statement.
“Traffic overall remained stable or even declined over the current year, while the ongoing trend of buying at discounts is redirecting price-sensitive consumers to outlets more than to flagship stores.”
“However, the outlet business is a highly professional and profitable business model for us, thus offering more opportunities than risks.”
Levi's also announced that its five-year plan will focus on expanding its women's clothing and outerwear range.
Job Cuts at Morrisons
In light of this, the supermarket chain Morrisons has cut 3,600 jobs following the closure of 17 stores as part of significant changes to its operations.
The total number of employees at Morrisons fell from 104,819 to 101,144 during the year ending October 27, 2024.
The cuts affected stores, the head office, as well as production and distribution.
Retail Outlook
“Retail chains are feeling pressure from rising energy costs and the shift to online shopping,” comments Professor Joshua Bamfield.
He noted that approximately 17,350 retail locations may close this year. In 2024, 13,000 stores have already closed, which is a 28% increase compared to the previous year.
In less than a year, 38 major retail companies have declared bankruptcy, including well-known brands like Lloyds Pharmacy and Ted Baker.
Why are Stores Closing?
Retailers are feeling increased pressure from rising living costs.
Additional costs complicate matters further for the sector. The retail center predicts that an increase in contributions to the social security fund from April will cost the sector £2.3 billion.
Upcoming changes to the minimum wage may further complicate matters for small shops.
The job cuts at major brands like Levi's and Morrisons highlight the challenging situation in retail. Despite increased profits, the shopping structure is changing as consumers increasingly choose to shop with discounts or at outlets. The fight against costs and adaptation to market conditions remain the main challenges for retailers.
