The Cabo Verde National Team on the verge of historic qualification for the World Cup: how a player from Ireland became crucial.
According to The Sun: 33-year-old Irishman Roberto Lopez could become part of a team aspiring to participate in the World Cup. This became possible thanks to his LinkedIn profile, which caught the attention of the Cabo Verde national team coach.
Roberto Lopez on the way to the World Cup with Cabo Verde ReutersLopez started his career at the Bohs club and has been playing for Shamrock Rovers since 2017. After one match for the Irish youth national team in 2011, he did not expect to later have the opportunity to represent Cabo Verde.

Everything changed when his LinkedIn profile caught the attention of the team coach. He shared: “I created a profile when I was in college, but I never paid attention to it. Suddenly, I got a message from coach Rui Aguas, at first I thought it was spam.”
“Later, he wrote to me again asking about joining the Cabo Verde national team,” Lopez added.
Now Lopez and his team are one step away from becoming the second smallest country (after Iceland in 2018) to qualify for the World Cup.
The Cabo Verde national team is currently leading its group, ahead of Cameroon by 4 points. There are two matches left, and Lopez hopes to make his dream come true.
The island nation with a population of about 600,000 joined FIFA in 1986 and has gradually progressed in international football since then. Coach Bubista noted that he employs a strategic approach to attract talent from Cabo Verde's large diasporas.
Lopez is already ready for new challenges and looks forward to the opportunity to play in a prestigious tournament like the World Cup.
Cabo Verde, which is on its way to the World Cup, has a real chance to make history in football. The national team is showing confident play, and the arrival of Lopez could be a key factor in their campaign. If the team maintains its chosen trajectory, the small island nation may have the opportunity to perform successfully on the world stage. Read also
