New Manchester United Stadium: Architect Foster Reveals Details of Unique Project

According to The Sun: The architect of the new Manchester United stadium, Lord Norman Foster, describes the £2 billion project as a "project of a lifetime".

The club unveiled plans for a 100,000-seat stadium earlier this year, aiming to transform the Old Trafford area.

The club's chief executive, Sir Jim Ratcliffe, hopes the stadium will become the "Wembley of the North".

United plan to complete construction within five years, despite the high project cost, which will include a massive umbrella roof.

Lord Foster has endorsed the stadium plans and is confident they will have a "uniting" effect on the club and the city.

When asked if he was excited to be involved in the project, he replied:

“Oh, yes! The fanbase is incredible.”

The architect also added that the project is a "masterplan that will create streets, squares, neighborhoods and connect to the heart of Manchester".

Commenting on the stadium's uniqueness, Foster noted:

“Manchester United is special, and therefore their stadium will be different... and, of course, better.”

His firm Foster + Partners has recorded revenue growth from £421.7 million to £652.9 million for the year ending April 30, 2025, and the United project has even greater profit potential.

Old Trafford Stadium, where the team has played since 1910, may be demolished after the new stadium is completed.

The new plans include a vast public square that will be "twice the size of Trafalgar Square".

The plans were revealed during one of the club's most challenging periods in history.

United are facing difficulties on the pitch and have debts exceeding £1 billion, while Ratcliffe is taking steps to reduce costs.

He has raised ticket prices, cut perks, and canceled free lunches in the club's training center cafeteria.

Ratcliffe noted that the club would have "exploded by Christmas" without the changes he implemented.

Speaking about the stadium plans earlier this year, he emphasized the goal of creating a unique and stylish arena.

He said:

“Norman Foster's job was to build the most iconic football stadium in the world. It should be a stadium that will be recognized all over the world.”

“We told Norman that we want the stadium to be instantly recognizable whenever anyone sees it anywhere in the world. It's more than just a new stadium. Everyone knows about the Eiffel Tower, and everyone wants to visit it. Everyone in the world will want to visit this stadium.”

The new stadium project speaks to Manchester United's ambitions and the club's desire to become not just a football center but also a cultural hub. In today's world, stadiums often become key elements of the identity of cities and their residents. No matter how many times clubs face difficulties, it is always essential to remember that successful projects can unite the community and bring fans back to the stands.
