The world's deepest marathon will take place in Sweden: how to run at a depth of 1120 meters.
Unique marathon under extreme conditions
According to The Sun: “Running a marathon is hard, but doing it at a depth of 1,120 meters underwater, in complete silence and darkness, will truly test participants at the limits of their abilities.”
Bear Grylls has impressed the world many times with his achievements, but his new project raises the challenges to a new level. For the first time in history, a marathon will take place at such a great depth.
Inside the Garpenberg zinc mine, the venue for the World's Deepest Marathon World's Deepest Marathon Garpenberg - one of Sweden's oldest mines, founded in 350 BC World's Deepest MarathonIn a month, 60 amateurs from various corners of the world will participate in a marathon at a depth of 1,120 meters in the Garpenberg zinc mine in Sweden.
With a depth four times that of the Eiffel Tower, this marathon promises to be a unique experience for participants. No other marathon in history has taken place at such a depth.
The temperature in the mine will be around 28°C, and participants will run 18 laps through a tunnel that is 2.4 km long in complete darkness.
The goal of the event is to set two world records according to Guinness and raise over a million pounds for charity.
Huge challenges and preparation
Pavlo Hurnyi, co-founder of the organizers BecomingX, talks about the challenges participants will face:
“Imagine you are running on a treadmill in the dark with a headlamp in elevated temperatures. This is one of the toughest psychological challenges.”
In 2022, 100 Britons ran 91 laps inside a World War II bunker in Portsmouth, but the marathon in Garpenberg poses entirely different challenges.
This mine is one of the most modern in the world, mining about 3.5 million tons of ore annually.
The mine is more than two hours drive from a hotel in Stockholm, in a remote part of Sweden
World's Deepest Marathon
Marathon for everyone
Among the participants will be those who are trying a marathon for the first time. Toni-Ivana Avofeso and Claire-Marie Rosario from the Alpine Run Project aim to help youth from inner cities engage in active rest.
“Perhaps it is even harder than on a treadmill.”
Bear Grylls also shared his thoughts on the competition:
“This will be a true test of mental and physical endurance.”
Participants will have to overcome serious challenges during the marathon
