According to Espreso.tv: Oleksandra Bulana, an analyst at the Ukrainian Center for European Policy, emphasized the significance of Ireland assuming the EU Council presidency in advancing the bloc’s enlargement agenda, particularly regarding Ukraine’s membership. She noted that Ireland favors EU expansion and supports the Union’s development, positioning it as a pivotal actor in this process.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy arrived in Ireland on July 1 and attended the opening ceremony of Ireland’s EU Council presidency. This visit carries considerable weight, highlighting Ukraine’s ongoing efforts toward European integration.
Ireland’s Political Credibility
Bulana also remarked that successfully driving the EU enlargement issue is a matter of political credibility for Ireland. She stated that
“Ireland will make every effort to reach a consensus on this matter”— Oleksandra Bulana. These comments underscore the importance of political support and concerted efforts among EU member states in the context of enlargement, which includes Ukraine.
Ireland’s EU Council presidency could mark a decisive phase for Ukraine’s aspirations to join the European Union, especially amid contemporary challenges. As a country that champions EU expansion, Ireland has the opportunity to help shape a positive perception of Ukraine among other member states. This could influence subsequent steps in negotiations over Ukraine’s EU membership, particularly regarding security and economic dimensions that remain pressing amid geopolitical shifts in the region.
