Murder of Defector Pilot Kuzminov: Investigation in Spain Halted

According to ТСН: Spanish authorities have temporarily halted the investigation into the murder of Russian pilot Maxim Kuzminov. In 2023, he flew to Ukraine in a Russian military Mi-8 helicopter for the Main Intelligence Directorate.

According to a statement from the Spanish Judicial Council, the judge handling the case received a report from the Civil Guard. The document states that all attempts to identify the shooter have been unsuccessful, and therefore the investigation has been decided to be suspended due to the 'lack of suspects'.

How Kuzminov Was Killed

The pilot was found dead on February 13, 2024, in a garage in the city of Villajoyosa (Alicante province). According to the investigation, he was shot six times with a Makarov pistol, and after that, his body was moved by car. The killers fled in Kuzminov's stolen car, which was later found burned in neighboring El Campello.

As noted by The New York Times, the use of a Makarov pistol and the method of committing the crime may indicate possible Russian involvement.

What is Known About the Operation

In August 2023, Kuzminov transferred a combat Mi-8AMTSH to Ukraine and surrendered. Along with him on board were two crew members who were unaware of the plan — they were liquidated. The pilot's family was evacuated from the Russian Federation prior to the operation.

The helicopter remained intact and, after a technical examination, was to replenish Ukraine's fleet. Head of the GUR Kyrylo Budanov described this special operation as 'the first successful one in Ukraine's history.'

The situation surrounding Kuzminov's case remains complicated, as halting the investigation may raise additional questions regarding security and justice in such high-profile cases. As for the very fact of his murder, it underscores the danger faced by deserters and participants in similar operations in conflict zones.
