Inter legend praises plans for the new stadium

According to The Sun: Christian Vieri, a legend of Inter Milan, is confident that 'the time has come' for the demolition of San Siro, as plans for a new stadium are actively underway.

San Siro has been the home ground of AC Milan since 1926, and since 1947 it has been shared with Inter Milan.

Throughout its history, the arena has hosted countless legendary matches, including four Champions League finals.

There is increasing demand for a new modern stadium, especially nearly a century after San Siro was opened.

Milan and Inter purchased the San Siro site from the city council of Milan for approximately 167 million pounds and are now actively implementing plans for a new stadium.

It is expected that the original San Siro will be demolished, and a new stadium will be built in its place, with work scheduled to be completed by 2031.

The new arena will have 71,500 seats, and construction is set to begin in 2027.

Vieri, who played for both teams, became a legend of Inter and is considered one of the club's greatest players.

He emphasized that the city 'deserves' a new stadium that will open up opportunities for hosting major sporting events in Italy.

“It has long been time. Finally, we will get a new stadium, as the city of Milan deserves,” said Vieri.

“Even Wembley was demolished and a new modern arena was built, better suited to the needs of football and modern society. We can do the same without crying about it.”

“Wonderful memories will remain, but frankly, the inability to host the Euro or the Champions League final due to the lack of a modern stadium is unacceptable. And honestly, I do not think it is beneficial for anyone.”

The implementation of the new stadium project is being handled by architects Foster + Partners, who are also working on the design of a 100,000-seat stadium for Manchester United.

Foster + Partners, led by British architect Lord Norman Foster, have received the contract to design the new 71,500-seat stadium, which will feature 'two large tiers'.

Both clubs are still awaiting formal approval of the agreement with the city council, but have already noted plans for a 'world-class' facility that will become a 'symbol for football fans worldwide'.

“We are pleased with the city council's approval of the sale of San Siro and its surrounding area: this is a historic and decisive step for the future of the clubs and the city,” the statement said.

It is expected that at least 91 percent of the original San Siro will be demolished.

We hope that part of the old stadium will be preserved and become part of the new project.

The plans of Foster + Partners for the new stadium have yet to be revealed.

Over the years, various ideas have emerged regarding a possible replacement for San Siro, one of the most interesting being an underground stadium proposed by architect Davide Bruno.

These plans also envisioned the construction of luxury hotels and restaurants, as well as event spaces.

There was also a proposal for a new park to be created above the stadium, which would include 20,000 trees, 500,000 flowers, and more than four miles of walking paths.
