EU Membership for Ukraine Outweighs Territorial Concessions, Argues Italian Senator Calenda.
Senator Carlo Calenda's Address
According to UATV: Italian Senator Carlo Calenda has urged against making territorial concessions to the Kremlin, emphasizing instead the critical importance of supporting Ukraine and its accession to the European Union. Speaking on the international stage, Calenda stressed that
"a ceasefire must not come at the cost of legitimizing Russia's occupation,"highlighting the necessity of preserving Ukraine's territorial integrity.
On February 24, 2023, Calenda expressed his firm belief that Ukraine must be granted a clear path to EU membership as swiftly as possible.
"We must welcome Ukraine into the European Union at the earliest opportunity,"the senator asserted, arguing that Ukraine's accession would not only be a pivotal step for the nation itself but also a vital security guarantee for the entire Union. This perspective reflects a broader European debate on how to best ensure long-term stability on the continent.
International Leaders Echo Support for Ukraine
This view has been echoed by Estonian President Kersti Kaljulaid, who also underscored the significance of Ukraine's EU integration. She believes this move would serve as a security guarantee not only for Kyiv but for the whole of the European Union. Thus, the positions of the Italian senator and the Estonian president reflect a growing consensus in Europe on the necessity of supporting Ukraine in the face of contemporary geopolitical challenges.
The stance of Carlo Calenda and Kersti Kaljulaid demonstrates increasing support for Ukraine among European leaders regarding its European integration. It also underscores the importance of international unity in confronting aggression and the need to ensure regional stability. Ukraine's accession to the EU could mark a crucial milestone not just for the country itself, but for strengthening security across Europe as a whole.
