Ivano-Frankivsk imposes ban on electric scooters: what will change.
Ivano-Frankivsk restricts movement on electric transport
According to inkorr.com: From mid-October, riding electric scooters, electric bicycles, and other personal electric transport will be banned in Ivano-Frankivsk. This decision makes the city the first regional center in Ukraine with such restrictions.
According to Forbes, segways and various types of personal electric transport are also included in the ban. Local authorities are actively preparing to implement the new rules.
'We are installing signs, preparing response patrols,' said Mykhailo Smushak, director of the Department of Infrastructure, Housing, and Communal Policy of the Ivano-Frankivsk City Council.
The reason for this decision was an incident in September when a 6-year-old child was hospitalized due to a collision with electric transport. This case prompted the city council to review the regulation of electric transport movement in the center.
According to statistics, the security situation in 2024 has worsened: the number of offenses involving electric scooters has increased by 42%.
Monitoring traffic violations and road safety
The patrol police is considering allowing citizens to record traffic violations on their devices. This will become part of an initiative aimed at strengthening control and creating 'cases of punishment,' according to drivers.
Among other important proposals is to reduce the 'non-punished threshold' for speeding from 20 km/h to 10 km/h. This draft law is being discussed in the context of initiatives aimed at increasing road safety based on international experience.
There is also a discussion about implementing strict penalties for extreme driving, including fines of up to 17,000 hryvnias with the loss of driving rights for drifting. Additionally, the possibility of confiscating cars from drunk drivers during martial law for the benefit of the Armed Forces of Ukraine is being considered.
It should be noted that there is a draft law being discussed in the Verkhovna Rada that could change the rules for elderly drivers, including mandatory medical examinations and psychological testing for drivers over 65 years old.
Ivano-Frankivsk has become the first regional center in Ukraine to ban the movement of electric scooters and electric bicycles in the center. This decision was made after an incident involving electric transport, highlighting the worsening safety problem on the roads. New initiatives regarding monitoring traffic violations and strict penalties for drivers who are intoxicated or engage in extreme maneuvers are also under discussion.
