This tragic news happened on the first day of the Ryder Cup when the USA team competed against the Europe team.
Just six weeks before her death, Makena wrote Jake a touching message on Instagram.
This was her last post, in which she talked about their wonderful relationship and expressed hope for 'many more' years together.
“Year 2 of first hugs on the first hole and watching you chase your dreams,” she wrote.
“Second formation complete. Forever grateful to be beside you, hoping for many more!”
“I love you, sweet boy, you make it so easy to be proud.”
Today one of her friends took over her Instagram to announce her death.
“Hello everyone - this is Makena's friend writing with a heavy heart to share that Makena passed away earlier this week,” the message says.
“She is already greatly missed by her father, family, friends, as well as Nelly and Fergie.”
“Makena was one of a kind. She had a rare ability to make you feel special, and her big heart was always overflowing with love.”alt='' class='alignnone size-thesun-article-image wp-image-36820469' width='960' height='640' />
“If you want to honor Makena's memory, donations to the Bruyère Brain Health and Memory Clinic or the Griffin Bell Endovascular Medicine Fund would be meaningful.”
“We love you, Mak. You will always be missed, and we will look for you at sunset.”
After the news of her death, numerous golfers expressed their condolences. CBS Sports reporter Amanda Balionis noted: “Getting to know Makena was one of my favorite parts of this last year.”
Another golfer and podcaster Dan Rapaport added: “What a bright light she was.”
Makena had been dating pro golfer Knapp for the past two years, who is currently ranked 80th in the world. They announced their relationship after Knapp's first PGA Tour win in Mexico last year.
Makena was from Ottawa, Ontario. In 2019, she graduated from McMaster University with degrees in communications and software engineering.
She worked in medical equipment sales, primarily supplying it to vascular and cardiac surgeons.
Not just golf, Makena was also a passionate sports fan, actively supporting her home hockey team, the Ottawa Senators.
Growing up in a golf-loving environment, she rekindled her love for the game by falling for Knapp.
The 31-year-old golfer turned professional in 2016 and spent three years on the PGA Tour Canada, before returning in 2022.
During 2020, 2021, and 2023, he also played on the Korn Ferry Tour.
To support his golf career, Knapp worked as a bouncer in a restaurant that also served as a nightclub in his hometown of Costa Mesa, California, from 2021 to 2022.
Makena left the world, leaving behind a memory of grace and light she gave to those around her. Her death was an unexpected blow not only to those close to her but also to many who knew her. The tributes held testify to how uniquely she captivated the hearts of everyone around.Read also
