Jamie Vardy will play for the Italian club with the great-grandson of Benito Mussolini.
Vardy's move to the Italian club
According to The Sun: James Vardy, a 38-year-old footballer who finished a 13-year stint at Leicester, signed a contract with the Italian club Cremonese on the last day of the transfer window.
GettyIn his new team, Vardy will play alongside Romano Fioriani Mussolini, the great-grandson of dictator Benito Mussolini, who has also signed with Cremonese. Romano, born in 2003, previously played for the youth academy of Roma before moving to Lazio.
Fioriani's football career
This season he has been loaned to Cremonese, where he recently debuted in Serie A. At just 22 years old, he is trying to distance himself from his grandfather’s legacy, who was the fascist ruler of Italy. Fioriani notes that he is not interested in politics and that his shirt only bears his name — Romano.
“I am here to play football,” he said, adding, “My surname concerns others more than it concerns me.”
The surname Fioriani can cause difficulties, as happened during his loan period at Juve Stabia. After his goal in a match against Cesena, some fans celebrated with fascist gestures, although the club denied these allegations.
The situation at Cremonese
Fioriani and Vardy now intend to fight for survival at Cremonese, which was promoted to Serie A from Serie B last season. The club started with decent results, achieving a shocking victory over AC Milan on the first matchday, as well as defeating Sassuolo, maintaining their perfect play this season.
Vardy signed a one-year contract with the option to extend for another year if his new club remains in Serie A. He was warmly welcomed in northern Italy, with fans gathering to greet him upon his arrival.
Vardy was surrounded by fans when he arrived in Italy to complete his transfer
Vardy's move to Cremonese not only marks an important milestone in his career but also opens up new opportunities for Romano Fioriani, who, regardless of his family, aims to make his mark in the world of football. How both players will impact the club's future remains to be seen, but their collaboration promises to be interesting.
