Criticism of the President of PGA of America

According to The Sun: The President of PGA of America faced harsh criticism after an interview where he seemed to downplay the appalling insults directed at Rory McIlroy.

During Europe's victory over America in the Ryder Cup, McIlroy and his family became the target of crude shouts from some fans.

It should be noted that Rory faced homophobic insults and became the target of items thrown by some angry fans on Saturday.

However, in an interview with the BBC, Don Rea seemed to downplay the seriousness of the situation.

He noted that European players did not face worse treatment than the US team during their visit to Rome in 2023.

Before the singles session on Sunday, he stated: “I didn't hear some of those shouts. I’m sure it happened. It was happening when we were in Rome, and Rory understands that.”

“I think he handled the press conference wonderfully, but these things will happen.”

“I don't know what was said, but I know that golf is a driving force for good.”

Rea also noted that the US team also faced heckling from fans after tough starts over the first two days of the Ryder Cup.

He emphasized: “When our American players have to deal with the crowd, it distracts them from their game.”

“So our message today to everyone: support Americans like never before, as it will always help them play better.”

“Get them out of crowd control and let them play.”

“We tell fans: booing someone doesn’t improve their game. Usually it makes them play better.”

Online feedback was mostly negative. One fan remarked: “Jesus wept. What hope do you have when this is how the leaders respond?”

“Don Rea, president of PGA of America, resorts to ignorance in response to fans directing homophobic slurs at Rory McIlroy.”

Another added: “How can they be so ignorant? This is just pathetic.”

A third expressed: “He should resign over this whole episode. Absolutely unacceptable.”

Yet another user stated: “This is terrible.”

American actress and comedian Heather McMahon stepped down from her role as host at this event after seemingly encouraging shouts of “f*** you, Rory” from the crowd.

This situation highlights how crucial fan interaction is in the sports environment. The comments from the PGA president sparked a lively discussion among fans calling for a more responsible approach to conduct in the stands. Russian viewers are now waiting to see how the leadership and organizers will react to such incidents in the future.
