Mourinho on working at Fenerbahce: I made a mistake, it's not my level.
Mourinho on his time at Fenerbahce
According to The Sun: Jose Mourinho criticized Fenerbahce, admitting that his decision to join the club was “a mistake.”
The Portuguese coach has returned to his homeland, signing a contract with Benfica.
ReutersMourinho replaced Bruno Lage as coach and hopes for improvement after a difficult experience in Turkey.
The coach had several disputes with Fenerbahce's main competitor – Galatasaray, as well as with Turkish football authorities.
For “offensive remarks” regarding the level of refereeing in the country, he received a four-match suspension. Mourinho also dismissed accusations from Galatasaray of racism during last season's derby.
Mourinho left Fenerbahce after the club's failure to qualify for the Champions League, losing to his new team – Benfica.
Acknowledging Mistakes
Now the former Chelsea and Manchester United coach speaks about his time in the Turkish capital. He admits that joining Fenerbahce turned out to be a mistake.
“I made a mistake when I went to Fenerbahce, it's not my cultural level, not my football level, not my level.”
“Obviously, I gave everything until the last day. I should have mourned, like Bruno (Lage), because nobody likes to leave.”
“But coaching Benfica is a return to my level, and my level is coaching the biggest clubs in the world.”
Mourinho's return to Benfica marks a new chapter in his coaching career after unsuccessful attempts at Fenerbahce. The warmly received return to his home club may provide confidence to both him and the team, hoping for successful results in upcoming competitions.
This also emphasizes the importance of strategic decisions in a coach's career, as challenges and temptations in other countries do not always lead to desired success.
