Judd Trump changed his cue after seven years: the reason for the unexpected decision.
Judd Trump changed his cue after seven years for the English Open
According to The Sun: The world number one, Judd Trump, decided to change his cue after seven years for the English Open.
The 36-year-old player remains a strong competitor in the 2024-25 season, having already won the Shanghai Masters, Saudi Arabia Masters, and UK Championship.
GettyAlthough Trump is famous for his successes, he appeared at the tournament in Brentwood with a new cue.
After a 4-0 victory in the first round over Michael Holt, Judd was asked about his new choice.
“I just felt like a change.”
“I need more power. I’ve had this cue for a few weeks, so I’ll try it out and see how it goes.”
“I’m not someone who changes cues often; if I find a good one, I stick with it for as long as possible.”
“But the conditions have become tougher over the last few years: it’s harder to get the ball back and generate more power.”
“I feel like a cue loses some of its qualities after a few years, and it needs to be updated from time to time.”
It seems the new cue helped Trump, as he easily defeated Holt.
However, the former world champion is not overly enthusiastic about it, noting:
“I don't consider it perfect.”
“It’s very different from my old cue, so I need to get used to the new one. But no excuses, I’ve practiced enough.”
Another match and season results
This season, Judd lost in the quarterfinals in Shanghai to Mark Selby, in the fifth round in Saudi Arabia to Oliver Lines, and in the next round in Wuhan to Jack Lisowski.
The world number 1 will return to the ring today, where he will meet the Chinese player Yuan Sijun in Brentwood.

The prospects with the new cue may give him extra confidence and help in achieving new high results in upcoming matches. It will be interesting to see how he uses this new tool at the Brentwood tournament.
