EU's Kaja Kallas: Russia Stalls for Time and Refuses to Compromise in Talks.
Kaja Kallas on Russia and Peace Negotiations
According to UATV: Kaja Kallas, the European Union's High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, has stated that the Russian Federation must make concessions to achieve peace. Her remarks, delivered during a speech in Krakow, came as defense ministers from the 'Group of Five' were also meeting in the city. She emphasized that negotiations in Geneva demonstrate Moscow's strategy of stalling for time. The EU has consistently supported Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity since Russia's full-scale invasion began in February 2022.
Kallas noted that the Geneva talks have once again shown Russia's unwillingness to retreat from its maximalist demands. She also stressed that the war has grown more brutal for Ukraine over the past year. According to her, Putin will not end this war until the costs for Russia outweigh the benefits, a calculation she identified as the central issue to consider.
Sanctions Against Russia and the Political Situation
In the context of these developments, the adoption of a 20th package of sanctions against Russia is planned. Kallas underscored that Moscow is not invincible, as its military is suffering record losses. These statements reflect the broader European Union position on the necessity for a change in Russian policy to achieve regional stability.
The remarks by Kaja Kallas highlight the importance of continued diplomatic pressure on Russia from the international community amid the protracted war in Ukraine. While the European Union continues to employ sanctions as a tool of influence, the question of whether a sustainable peace can be achieved remains pressing. The adoption of a new sanctions package could represent another step toward altering the political calculus and influencing the Kremlin's actions.
