EU's Kaja Kallas: Ukraine Should Only Make Concessions to Russia with U.S. and European Security Guarantees.
EU Foreign Policy Chief Kaja Kallas on Ukraine's Security
According to UATV: Kaja Kallas, the European Union's High Representative for Foreign Affairs, has stated that Ukraine should only consider making concessions to Russia if it receives concrete security guarantees from the United States and Europe. She emphasized that Russia currently shows no willingness to make concessions in the process of finding a peaceful resolution to its conflict with Ukraine. This stance underscores the West's position that any negotiations must not compromise Ukraine's long-term sovereignty.
Abu Dhabi Meeting Held Under U.S. Pressure
A trilateral meeting involving Ukraine, the United States, and Russia took place in Abu Dhabi on January 29, 2023. The meeting was convened under pressure from the White House. Kallas noted that achieving any concessions from Russia would require significantly increasing pressure on Moscow.
'We must exert more pressure on Russia to secure concessions from the Russian side' – Kaja Kallas
Kallas's comments reflect the complex geopolitical situation and highlight the critical role of diplomatic efforts in pursuing peace. Her expressed views indicate that ensuring Ukraine's security remains a top priority for both the EU and the U.S. Diplomatic initiatives, like the Abu Dhabi meeting, are part of the international community's broader efforts to achieve stability in the region. While increased pressure on Russia could be a key factor in the peace process, Kallas stresses that for such efforts to be effective, Ukraine requires clear and firm security assurances from its Western partners.
