Canada to Extend Military Mission in Latvia for Another 3 Years: What It Means.

Canada to Extend Military Mission in Latvia
Canada has decided to extend its military presence in Latvia for another three years. Prime Minister Mark Carney announced this, emphasizing the importance of this mission.
Operation Reassurance
Operation Reassurance is Canada's largest overseas initiative within NATO. It involves over 3,000 military personnel and the mission encompasses actions at sea, land, and air. It was launched in 2014 in response to Russia's annexation of Crimea.
Prime Minister's Comment
Carney emphasized the need to deter the aggressor and noted that the Kremlin cannot be trusted.
'Today we look back at the times leading up to Latvia's restoration of independence. It is worth recalling Reagan's peacekeeping efforts and his slogan 'trust but verify' in relations with Gorbachev. But Putin is not Gorbachev. He seeks darkness, not transparency, to create an empire, not perestroika. In the case of Putin, we cannot trust, but we must verify. And acting within the 'coalition of the willing,' we must deter and strengthen,' said the Prime Minister of Canada.
Future Plans
Canada also does not rule out the possibility of joining peacekeeping forces in Ukraine after the war concludes.
This decision reaffirms Canada's commitment to strengthening its military presence in the region and ensuring stability. Operation Reassurance continues to be an important element of NATO's collective security, and the decision to extend the mission reflects Canada's clear stance in the context of current security challenges in Europe. Participation in peacekeeping forces in Ukraine may also demonstrate Canada's readiness to take a more active role in peace restoration in the region after the conflict concludes.
