Germany's Chancellor Merz: Ukraine, Not the EU, Must Lead Any Talks with Russia.
Germany's Stance on Negotiations with Russia
According to TSN.ua: German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has dismissed calls for the European Union to engage in direct negotiations with Russia concerning the war in Ukraine. He stated that any talks must occur directly between Ukraine and Russia, with Germany refusing to act as a mediator between the two warring parties.
Vice Chancellor Lars Klingbeil added that the question of whether European states might hold direct talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin should be considered at a later date. His remarks reinforce the position that, for now, the primary responsibility for leading any dialogue rests with Ukraine. This stance reflects a broader Western principle that the nation defending itself against aggression should control its own diplomatic path.
Ukraine's Sovereignty in Leading Negotiations
Consequently, Germany affirms its support for indirect negotiations and maintains that Ukraine retains the right to decide the timing and format of any discussions with Russia.
Berlin's position underscores the importance of Ukrainian sovereignty in any potential peace process and its own unwillingness to serve as an intermediary in this conflict. With the war ongoing, it is crucial that Kyiv determines if and when to engage its aggressor, a decision that will significantly shape the future security landscape of Europe.
