Ukraine's Prosecutor General Announces Special Investigation into Yanukovych and 16 Former Officials.
Special Pre-Trial Investigation Targets Viktor Yanukovych
According to Espreso.tv: Prosecutor General Ruslan Kravchenko has announced the launch of a special pre-trial investigation into Viktor Yanukovych and 16 other former senior officials implicated in a criminal case concerning an organized crime network allegedly established by the ex-president between 2010 and 2014. According to Kravchenko, this system operated across nearly all state sectors and regions of the country.
The investigation alleges that after February 25, 2010, Yanukovych began using his powers against the interests of the state. In 2013, he reportedly ordered law enforcement agencies and the Armed Forces of Ukraine to violently suppress protesters. Between November 21, 2013, and February 20, 2014, 70 civilians were killed and over 1,200 protesters sustained injuries.
Holding Perpetrators Accountable
The criminal case involves 17 former top state officials, including:
- former Prime Minister Mykola Azarov;
- the head of the Ministry of Internal Affairs;
- the head of the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) and their deputies;
- leaders of SBU units, the Ministry of Defense, and the commander of the Internal Troops of the Ministry of Internal Affairs.
Preventive measures for those charged include pre-trial detention.
The pre-trial investigation has been conducted under a special in absentia procedure. As Ruslan Kravchenko noted,
“Completing the investigation is not the end point, but a transitional stage to the next phase of accountability.”In April 2023, a former special forces company commander of the Kyiv 'Berkut' regiment was sentenced to 10 years for destroying weapons.
This pre-trial investigation into Yanukovych and 16 former high-ranking officials marks a new chapter in a case centered on an alleged criminal organization that, according to the prosecutor, inflicted serious damage on Ukraine during its time in power.
The special investigation underscores the ongoing pursuit of justice for those responsible for the Euromaidan events, a critical step toward restoring accountability in Ukraine. It may also shape public perception and trust in law enforcement, as society demands punishment for crimes against civilians. The next stages of the process will determine how justice is ultimately delivered in light of the historical events that took place under Yanukovych's rule.
