Vice Presidential Candidate Tim Walz: What He Said About Ukraine.
Kamala Harris Selects Minnesota Governor as Running Mate in Presidential Bid
On Tuesday, August 6, presidential candidate Kamala Harris announced the name of her running mate, a likely vice-presidential candidate from the Democratic Party. It was Minnesota Governor Tim Walz.
Walz has supported Ukraine since the early days of Russia's full-scale invasion. As early as February 24, 2022, he wrote words of support for Ukraine on his X network page.
Minnesota stands with the people of Ukraine and condemns Russia for this unlawful aggression. Leaders around the world must unite and respond to this attack on democracy.
The next day, February 25, he, along with Ohio Governor Republican Mike DeWine, announced bipartisan support for Ukraine on behalf of the Council of Governors. This is an advisory body to the federal government of the USA.
We stand with Ukraine and condemn Russia for these unprovoked and unlawful attacks. We are ready to support the federal government in leading our country through this Time of violence, and I commit to working with leaders at all levels of government, regardless of political party, to achieve peace. It is time to unite, defend democracy, and work together to end the violence and hold Russia accountable.
Several months later, they supported U.S. President Joe Biden's initiative to strengthen U.S. cybersecurity amid Russian aggression in Ukraine.
We share your concern about the importance of cybersecurity resilience as a national priority, and we assure you that our fellow governors remain committed to protecting the networks, systems, and operational technologies that our country and economy rely on.
On March 2, in solidarity with Ukraine, Walz visited a Ukrainian Catholic church in Minneapolis.
On March 4, Governor Walz signed an executive order requiring all state-level agencies to sever any ties with Russian entities and refrain from future contacts. The order also urged private companies to cease cooperation with Moscow.
Less than a month later, a similar bill was approved by the Minnesota legislature, which also expanded the ban to Belarus.
On March 6, 2022, Walz declared a Day of Solidarity with Ukraine in Minnesota.
We stand together with our Ukrainian community at a time when the brave and resilient people of Ukraine continue to defend freedom and democracy from tyranny.
In 2024, commemorating the second anniversary of Russia's full-scale invasion, Governor Tim Walz visited the Ukrainian embassy in Washington and met with Ukraine's Ambassador to the U.S., Oksana Markarova.
Minnesota will continue to support Ukraine as it defends freedom and democracy. I visited the Ukrainian embassy to establish an official partnership between Minnesota's public, private, and academic sectors and Ukraine's Chernihiv region, strengthening our state's ties with Ukraine.
