Kaolin belongs to the group of critically important minerals, as it is used in high-tech production — from semiconductors to batteries. With significant reserves, Ukraine can become one of the key players in the raw materials market for the 'green' economy.
The Glukhivetska deposit is one of the purest in Europe in terms of kaolinite content. Ukrainian kaolin is valued in foreign markets for its high quality and supply stability.

Kaolin is not just white clay. It is a strategic raw material used in the production of ceramics, pharmaceuticals, plastics, paper, electronics, and even in medicine. Ukraine is among the top ten largest suppliers of kaolin in the world.

According to the Institute of Geology, the largest kaolin reserves in Ukraine are concentrated in the Vinnytsia region, particularly in the Tulchyn and Haisyn districts. One of the most famous deposits is Glukhivetska, located on the border of Vinnytsia and Khmelnytskyi regions.

Significant deposits are also found in Zhytomyr, Dnipropetrovsk, and Zaporizhia regions, but Podillia remains the main center for extraction.

The Volume of Kaolin Extraction in Ukraine Is Increasing

Annually, Ukraine extracts over 3 million tons of kaolin, over 70% of which goes for export. The main markets are EU countries, Turkey, and China. The lion's share of exports comes from the deposits in the Vinnytsia region.

Kaolin Industry and New Investments

After 2022, investor interest in the industry has increased. The state has activated licensing processes, and the private sector has begun modernizing equipment. New quarries and reconstruction of processing plants are planned for 2024-2025, particularly in the villages of Kukavka and Stina (Mohyliv-Podilskyi district).

This not only creates jobs but also raises export levels. It is expected that by 2026, kaolin processing volumes in Ukraine will increase by 30%, significantly affecting the region's GDP.

The Strategic Importance of Kaolin for the Economy

Moreover, kaolin does not require expensive processing, making its extraction and transportation economically feasible even for medium-sized businesses. This makes the industry accessible to domestic investors.

Challenges and Issues in the Kaolin Industry in Ukraine

Despite its potential, the industry faces a number of challenges:

  • Low level of local processing — most kaolin is exported in raw form.
  • Uneven regional development — while Vinnytsia dominates, other regions lag behind.
  • Outdated equipment — some enterprises do not meet modern environmental standards.

What is the Future of the Kaolin Industry

The market for ceramics, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, and electronics is growing every year. Accordingly, the demand for kaolin is also increasing. Ukraine has a chance to strengthen its position in the market, especially considering the European shift in supply chains and a reduction in dependence on China.

Experts believe that with the right state policy, Ukraine could double its kaolin export volumes by 2030 and enter new markets in Asia and the Middle East.

Ukraine is one of the key players in the kaolin market, with significant raw material reserves. Investors are actively interested in the industry, which could lead to its modernization and increased export volumes, positively impacting the region's GDP and the country's position in the global market.
