Potato Prices in Ukraine Surge by 17% in a Single Week.
Potato Price Trends in Ukraine for February 2023
According to Novyny.live: Potato prices in Ukraine are continuing their upward climb. In February 2023, prices for this staple food range from 7 to 14 hryvnias per kilogram, marking a significant 17% increase compared to the previous week. This sharp rise is primarily driven by dwindling storage reserves and heightened demand from wholesale buyers.
Average Potato and Vegetable Prices Across Retailers
In supermarkets, the average price for potatoes sits between 19.20 and 20.25 hryvnias per kilogram. However, costs vary considerably between specific retail chains:
- Auchan – 15.90 hryvnias per kilogram
- Megamarket – 22.50 hryvnias per kilogram
- Novus – 27.99 hryvnias per kilogram
The final price consumers pay is influenced by factors such as potato quality, variety, and the overall volume available on the market.
Beyond potatoes, prices for other vegetables, particularly tomatoes, remain elevated. In February 2023, tomato prices can reach 150 hryvnias per kilogram, with the average price for red tomatoes at the end of winter recorded at 158.19 hryvnias per kilogram. Given these market pressures, the anticipated arrival of imported potatoes could play a key role in shaping future price trends. This price volatility for basic foodstuffs is a common challenge in economies experiencing broader instability.
The rising cost of potatoes in Ukraine serves as a critical barometer of the nation's broader economic climate, as this product is a fundamental component of the diet for a large portion of the population.
Considering the high prices for other vegetables, potato imports may become a decisive factor for stabilizing the market. This development could subsequently influence consumer demand and the overall level of inflation within the country.
