Standard of Living in Ukraine and Europe

According to inkorr.com: To maintain a standard of living in Warsaw equivalent to the average salary in Kyiv, income must be significantly higher. For instance, a person earning approximately 30,000 UAH in the Ukrainian capital would need to earn 52,700 UAH in the Polish capital to preserve the same purchasing power.

This study was conducted based on data from the aggregator Numbeo and analyzed by 'Ekonomichna Pravda'. According to the July report from the National Bank on inflation, food prices in Ukraine have increased by an average of 79% in euro terms since 2016, while in EU countries, they have risen by only 46%. At the same time, several products, such as butter and pork, turned out to be more expensive in Ukraine than in Poland.

Difference in Income Levels

The main difference lies not only in prices but also in income levels. The average salary in Warsaw is three times higher than in Kyiv, amounting to approximately 90,000 UAH. In Berlin, this figure approaches 140,000 UAH, which is more than four times the income in the capital region of Ukraine. Despite life in the German capital being 114% more expensive and housing rent being twice as high, higher incomes provide Berliners with significant purchasing power.

Categories of Goods and Services

  • Transport and Utilities. Public transport in Kyiv is one of the cheapest in Europe (0.2-0.4 euros per trip), while in most EU capitals, a ticket costs several euros. In Warsaw, the cost of travel is five times higher. Fuel in Ukraine is about 25% cheaper due to lower excise taxes.

  • Food Products. The basic food basket (bread, milk, vegetables) in Ukraine is significantly inexpensive. According to Numbeo, the food price index in Kyiv is 32 points, in Warsaw - 46, and in Paris - 79.

  • Dining and Entertainment. A meal in a restaurant in Kyiv costs an average of 750 UAH, while in Warsaw, it is 60% more expensive, and in Paris - 90% more. A cinema ticket in Kyiv (around 200 UAH) is also significantly cheaper than in European cities (400-600 UAH).

  • Education and Healthcare. The cost of private kindergartens or schools in Kyiv is almost half that of Warsaw or Paris. At the same time, prices for medicines and medical services are not significantly lower than European due to a large share of imported drugs.

Prices for vegetables in September demonstrate significant fluctuations. The cost of potatoes, onions, and carrots can vary greatly between supermarkets and markets, where products are often sold at lower prices. At the end of the season, prices for watermelons and melons can also have significant variations.

Moreover, rental prices for apartments in Ukraine reach record levels. The most expensive city for renting housing has become Uzhhorod, surpassing Kyiv and Lviv.

Thus, Ukraine and European countries have noticeable differences in income levels and prices for goods and services. On one hand, salaries in Europe are significantly higher, but living costs are also rising. It is important for Ukrainians to consider these differences in order to maintain their standard of living.
