AI-Powered Cybercrime Costs the U.S. $16.6 Billion in a Single Year.
National Security Threats from Artificial Intelligence
According to Vox - Загальний: At the Aspen Institute summit in San Francisco, experts convened to discuss the national security threats posed by artificial intelligence, focusing on cybercrime and fraud. The United States suffered substantial losses of $16.6 billion from cybercrime in 2024, marking a 33% increase from the previous year. This alarming trend reflects a growing concern as cybersecurity attacks become both more sophisticated and frequent. The rapid evolution of AI tools is providing criminals with unprecedented capabilities.
Americans over the age of 60 proved particularly vulnerable, losing nearly $5 billion to fraud. According to a CrowdStrike report for 2026, attacks leveraging artificial intelligence surged by 89% year-over-year. The average time from an initial breach to an attacker's ability to move laterally across a network has shrunk to just 29 minutes, with the most experienced intrusions taking a mere 27 seconds. This data underscores the increasing efficiency and speed of modern cybercriminals.
The Urgent Need for Enhanced Security Measures
Summit participants emphasized that the scale of the cybercrime problem remains critically underestimated.
“The problem of cybercrime remains underestimated,” noted Todd Hemmen.Another discussant, Rob Joyce, expressed concern, stating:
“We are entering a period where offense significantly outpaces defense.”Commenting on the situation, Alice Marwick said: “I would say that overall I'm fairly pessimistic.”
A Deloitte forecast indicates that losses from generative AI-powered fraud in the U.S. could reach $40 billion by 2027. These projections highlight the urgent necessity for bolstered security measures and preparation for new cybersecurity challenges. Participants called for more active dialogue and collaboration between government agencies, the private sector, and society at large to counter these evolving threats.
The summit's discussions underscored the immediacy of the cybercrime crisis, which continues to grow in both scale and complexity, jeopardizing national security and public welfare. Given forecasts of escalating losses from AI-enabled fraud, it is imperative for all stakeholders to take proactive steps to strengthen cybersecurity and raise public awareness of the risks. Effective collaboration between government, business, and civil society is crucial for mounting a robust defense against these formidable challenges.
