Kyiv's Historic Monastery Reopens Its Ancient Caves to the Public.
Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra Reopens the Near Caves
According to Novyny.live: On February 24, 2023, the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra monastery held a ceremony to reopen its Near Caves, featuring a Prayer for Ukraine led by Metropolitan Epiphanius. This event marks a significant step in restoring historical justice and symbolizes a new chapter for the Kyiv Lavra. The Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra is a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of Eastern Orthodoxy's most important spiritual centers.
The Prayer for Ukraine was conducted in the Church of the Exaltation of the Cross. Metropolitan Epiphanius stated that
"This prayer and the beginning of a new phase in the Kyiv Lavra's life symbolize our determination to consistently uphold historical justice for Ukraine."The reopening was made possible after restoration work necessitated by damage to the Lavra's structures from a Russian artillery strike in January 2023.
Beginning February 25, 2023, the Near Caves are open to visitors. Believers can view the shrines free of charge from 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM. After 12:00 PM, guided tours will be available for tourist groups. Tetiana Berezhna, a Lavra representative, emphasized:
"We are reopening precisely the route that was traditional during the times of Petro Mohyla and Ivan Mazepa."
Additionally, Archimandrite Avraamii announced the Lavra's readiness to provide shelter for soldiers. This initiative underscores the monastery's vital role in supporting Ukrainian military personnel during the country's difficult times. The reopening of the Near Caves and the accompanying events contribute to the revival of Ukraine's spirituality and cultural heritage.
The reopening not only signifies the restoration of historical justice but also highlights the importance of spiritual support for the Ukrainian people during war. Making the shrines accessible to believers and tourists will help engage more people with the nation's history and culture, reinforcing the Lavra's role as a center of spirituality and patriotism. This event may inaugurate a new phase in recovering cultural heritage and strengthening social unity during a challenging period.
