Kyiv Metro Renames Three Stations to Honor National Heroes and a Sister City.
Kyiv Metro Stations Receive New Names
According to Novyny.live: In May 2023, the Kyiv City Council approved the renaming of three metro stations to honor Ukrainian heroes and a sister city. This move is part of a broader effort to commemorate significant figures and strengthen international ties, reflecting a national shift in public commemoration since Russia's full-scale invasion.
- The station formerly known as 'Druzhby Narodiv' (Friendship of Peoples) is now 'Zvirynetska,' emphasizing local identity and the historic Zvirynets neighborhood.
- 'Ploshcha Leva Tolstoho' (Leo Tolstoy Square) has been renamed 'Ploshcha Ukrainskykh Heroiv' (Square of Ukrainian Heroes), honoring the valor of Ukrainians throughout history.
- The planned station 'Prospekt Pravdy' (Truth Avenue), which is currently under construction, will be named 'Varshavska' (Warsaw). Its location near the Varshavskyi residential district symbolizes the friendly relations between Kyiv and the Polish capital.
These changes represent a significant step in recognizing national contributions and reinforcing bonds with partner cities.
Significance of the Decision
The importance of this decision extends beyond memorializing individuals; it aims to bolster patriotic sentiment among citizens. The renaming underscores Ukraine's growing role internationally and its desire to strengthen friendly relations with other nations, particularly Poland. Such symbolic acts can foster further integration and cooperation between Kyiv and Warsaw in various fields, including culture, economics, and education.
