Excavations Underway in the Former Villages of Ostrivky and Wola Ostrowiecka

According to Espreso.tv: Archaeologists from Poland and Ukraine have uncovered three burial sites in what were once the settlements of Ostrivky and Wola Ostrowiecka. These graves are believed to hold victims of the social and ethnic violence that erupted between Ukrainians and Poles in August 1943. The discovery was made in April 2023, and the ongoing digs aim to shed light on the tragic events of that period.

One of the burial pits measures six meters by one and a half meters. After five days of careful excavation, the remains of nine individuals were recovered, underscoring the scale of the tragedy. Among the artifacts found alongside the bodies were:

• a ring
• buttons
• beads

These personal items may offer clues about the lives of those who perished.

Ukraine and Poland Engage in Dialogue

In response to these findings, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy held a meeting on July 17, 2023, focused on relations with Poland. During the session, he pledged to open all archives held by the Security Service of Ukraine and the Foreign Intelligence Service of Ukraine. Such transparency could foster a deeper understanding of historical events and promote reconciliation between the two nations.

Anthropologist Tomasz Trzaska noted, 'The recovered remains will be cleaned of soil and then handed over to anthropologists for further study.'

Meanwhile, former Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk emphasized,

'Poland is ready for a friendly dialogue.'

The identification of mass graves from this ethnic conflict highlights the critical need to investigate history, which can help clarify the root causes of intercommunal strife. The collaboration between Ukrainian and Polish archaeologists reflects a mutual desire for understanding and reconciliation, crucial for both countries given their shared past. Opening the archives could also expand knowledge of these events and aid in resolving contemporary interstate relations.
