Temperatures there have already climbed to 47°C, and forecasts suggest they could hit a record-breaking 50°C by late July or early August. Scientists estimate that this heat has caused 10,650 excess deaths across the 27 EU countries in just one week—from June 22 to June 28.

Historically, the hottest stretch of summer falls in the last ten days of July and the first ten days of August. On the Italian island of Sardinia, the temperature in the shade has reached 47°C, one of the highest readings in the country. Sardinia's all-time record, set in July 2023, stands at 48.2°C. Meanwhile, Europe's highest temperature ever recorded—48.8°C in the shade—was measured on Sicily in the summer of 2021.

The heatwave first hit Europe on June 21, and by early July, Rome had already seen temperatures exceed 37°C.
