The program has been a key pillar of local defense efforts amid ongoing challenges.
Last year, over UAH 11 billion was allocated to the 'Defender of Kyiv' program. So far this year, the Kyiv City Council has already spent UAH 3 billion on supporting combat units. According to Andriy Strannikov, the additional funds will be directed toward:
- logistical and material support;
- fuel;
- procurement of various equipment, including electronic warfare systems, drones, and other items.
New Honorary Distinction and Infrastructure Initiatives
In addition, the Kyiv Council established a new municipal award called 'Honorary Defender of Kyiv,' recognizing the contributions of military personnel to the city's defense. This decision highlights the importance of acknowledging and supporting those who fight for Ukraine's security and independence.
Beyond financial aid for the military, the Kyiv Council also backed a plan to secure a €150 million loan for the purchase of 50 new subway cars. These measures reflect the city government's comprehensive approach to infrastructure development and bolstering the capital's defense capabilities. Overall, the Kyiv Council continues to actively work on improving conditions for the military and advancing urban development amid the country's ongoing challenges.
The increased funding for the 'Defender of Kyiv' program and the council's new initiatives underscore the urgent need to support military personnel in the context of the persistent challenges facing Ukraine. Ensuring material and logistical assistance is critical for enhancing defense effectiveness and boosting the morale of troops and their families. This decision demonstrates local authorities' efforts to maintain stability and security in the capital, a vital component of the nation's overall security framework.
