Kyiv's Urgent Need: 50 New Boiler Plants Highlight Critical Need for Advance Heating Planning in Ukraine.
Kyiv's Requirement for New Boiler Plants
According to TSN.ua: To ensure alternative heat generation, Kyiv requires approximately 50 new boiler plants, each with a capacity of 30 MW. In an interview with "Economic Truth," Oleksandr Kroshka, a board member of TM "Kolvi," stressed the critical importance of planning Ukraine's heating supply well in advance. This includes determining suitable locations and capacities for these plants. Proper planning can prevent the severe issues that arise when utilities scramble to find boiler plants in September, just a month before the heating season begins. This proactive approach is vital for a nation rebuilding its infrastructure while facing energy security challenges.
Ukraine's Experience with Decentralized Heating
Decentralized heating systems were already being implemented in parts of Ukraine, such as Kharkiv, prior to 2022. This demonstrates that planning and preparation for the heating season are critically important. The block-modular boiler plants used for decentralization can reduce natural gas consumption by roughly 30% for the production of 1 Gcal of heat. The payback period for investments in such plants is 3–4 years, making them an economically viable solution.
Oleksandr Kroshka noted that if heating networks freeze, the resulting damage could amount to losses measured not in tens, but even hundreds of millions of hryvnias.
This underscores the necessity for timely preparation and strategic planning. If the proper groundwork is completed, heat supply can be restored within just one or two hours. However, spontaneous procurement often leads to subsequent audits and questions about why the equipment remains unused. With European gas prices potentially reaching 400–500 euros per thousand cubic meters, the search for alternative heating solutions becomes even more pressing.
Consequently, advance planning for heat supply in Ukraine is an essential measure to prevent significant financial losses and ensure stable heating during the cold season. As the country contends with the challenges of energy independence and rising resource costs, timely action in this sector is paramount for securing comfortable conditions for both the population and industry.
