Kim outlines what Ukraine needs to become Europe’s logistics hub.
Kim on Ukraine’s role after the war ends
According to Novyny.live: According to Vitaliy Kim, head of the Mykolaiv Regional Military Administration, Ukraine has strong potential to emerge as one of Europe’s leading logistics and transit centers once the war concludes. He emphasized that realizing this opportunity will require a focused effort on expanding intermodal transport and strengthening the country’s economic momentum. For context, logistics and transportation currently account for roughly 6–6.5% of Ukraine’s GDP, or about 10% when related sectors are included—compared to over 15% in major transit economies, highlighting significant room for growth.
Infrastructure development is essential
At present, intermodal transport makes up less than 5% of Ukraine’s total freight traffic. Kim stressed that the country needs to build at least 10 to 15 large regional logistics hubs to become competitive on the European market.
“After the war, Ukraine will have all the prerequisites to regain its status as one of Europe’s key logistics and transit centers. But this won’t happen automatically,” Kim stated.
He added that this involves creating a new architecture for economic ties across the region.
“Ukraine must offer people a large-scale economy of the future, not just a reconstruction program for what was destroyed,” the regional governor concluded.
These remarks underscore the need for strategic planning and infrastructure development to drive the country’s economic recovery in the post-conflict period.
Vitaliy Kim’s comments highlight a forward-looking approach to rebuilding Ukraine, focusing on infrastructure and intermodal transport. Given current challenges, the country has a real opportunity to become a major player in European logistics markets, which could boost economic growth and deeper integration into the European economy. Building regional logistics hubs will be critical to achieving these goals.
