China shifts Europe-bound freight away from Russia on a new 4,000+ km route.
Freight transit through Russia sees reduction
According to Novyny.live: China is scaling back the volume of cargo shipments to Europe that pass through Russia, redirecting its focus to the Trans-Caspian International Transport Route. Spanning over 4,000 kilometers, this corridor crosses several nations including Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Georgia, Turkey, and the Caspian Sea. The move is expected to improve logistics efficiency and reduce risks tied to transporting goods across Russian territory. This shift reflects broader efforts by Beijing to diversify its trade corridors amid geopolitical uncertainties.
Kazakhstan Railways has announced plans to invest more than $10 billion in infrastructure development along this route. According to available data, 173 trains each carrying 55 containers traveled through Kazakhstan in the first quarter of 2026, signaling robust growth in regional cargo operations.
Growth outlook
The annual target is set at 600 trains, with projections indicating a 67% increase in this figure by 2027. Expanding freight volumes on the Trans-Caspian route could mark a significant milestone in international logistics, aligning with evolving economic dynamics.
Reducing reliance on Russian transit routes highlights a transformation in global supply chains that may reshape trade relations between China and European nations. Infrastructure investments also hold potential to drive economic growth across the region and strengthen cooperation among countries along the Trans-Caspian corridor.
This could become a key factor in reinforcing international economic ties.
