Military Cooperation Between China and Russia

According to Espreso.tv: Despite Beijing's official stance of neutrality in the Ukraine war, a joint investigation by The Insider, Der Spiegel, and Le Monde has uncovered deep military ties between China and Russia. Leaked documents point to collaborative development of advanced weaponry and coordinated efforts to counter the Starlink satellite network.

In June 2023, a bilateral forum on military-technical cooperation led to an agreement to synchronize the development of cutting-edge weapons systems and military technologies. The partnership spans five strategic areas:

  • Space-based weapons
  • Integrated air and missile defense systems
  • Autonomous drones
  • Next-generation armored vehicles
  • Military aviation

By 2024, Russia and China had agreed on the transfer of data concerning the use of Russian drones in Ukraine. Notably, the Russian V2U drone relies on Chinese artificial intelligence modules, highlighting the depth of technological integration between the two nations. Additionally, a new integrated air and missile defense system is under development, capable of intercepting American hypersonic missiles at altitudes up to 40 kilometers and ranges of up to 4,000 kilometers.

Russian military personnel are also being trained on drone operations at six military facilities in China. Reports indicate that 200 trained soldiers have returned to combat in Ukraine after completing their training. In July of this year, China and Russia scheduled joint naval exercises near Qingdao, further signaling the growing integration of their armed forces.

Implications for Global Security

These findings confirm active military collaboration between China and Russia, which could significantly impact regional and global security. By pooling their technological and military resources, both nations aim to counter Western powers, particularly the United States. As international tensions rise, this integration risks further destabilizing the region, especially in the context of the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
