Tracking Foreign Components in Russian Missiles and Drones

According to UATV: Ukraine is actively investigating the foreign-made parts found in Russian missiles and drones, sharing their serial numbers with partner nations. Over the past six months, Russia has launched 5,700 attacks on Kyiv and the surrounding region using drones and various missile types. These strikes have revealed approximately 35,000 foreign components.

Kyiv has provided allies with hundreds of serial numbers from parts manufactured by companies outside Russia. The recorded Russian attacks include:

  • 280 ballistic missiles
  • 340 cruise missiles
  • 36 'Zircon' hypersonic missiles
  • 5 'Kinzhal' missiles
  • One 'Oreshnik' intermediate-range ballistic missile

Notably, parts from a Dutch company have been identified in Russian 'Shahed' kamikaze drones.

Ukraine’s Strategic Approach to Component Tracing

Vladyslav Vlasiuk, a Ukrainian official, stated: 'Our idea, which partners understand, is that these are not just another batch of generic components—they are parts with specific serial numbers. We tell them: here are the serial numbers, investigate and stop the flow.'

This highlights Ukraine’s effort to track supply routes into Russia, which, according to reports, continue to bring in components from countries including the United States, Germany, Japan, Taiwan, Switzerland, and China.

'Even now, despite restrictions, components manufactured in 2025 are still reaching Russia,' Vlasiuk emphasized.

He added, 'For our part, we are doing everything possible to prevent the Russians from acquiring production tools.' These actions reflect Ukraine’s strategic approach to countering Russian attacks and the use of foreign parts in enemy military equipment.

Ukraine’s work to identify foreign components in Russian weapon systems could have significant implications for international arms supply controls. By exposing serial numbers, it may pressure Western manufacturers to reevaluate their exports to Russia, potentially limiting Moscow’s ability to sustain its military operations. These steps also underscore the need for global cooperation to counter aggression and enhance regional security.
