Illegal Real Estate Scheme Uncovered in Odesa

According to Novyny.live: Law enforcement in Odesa has dismantled a criminal operation that fraudulently seized property from a local resident, active since 2019. The scheme involved a state registrar, a lawyer, and a private notary who illegally transferred eight real estate assets—valued at nearly 18 million Ukrainian hryvnias (approximately $480,000)—to companies under their control. This case highlights ongoing challenges with property rights and corruption in Ukraine's real estate sector.

Properties Illegally Acquired

The stolen properties include:

  • Three apartments ranging from 155 to 280 square meters, located in Karakashadze Lane, and on Bazarna and Chornomorska Streets;
  • Two summer houses in the Velykyi Fontan area;
  • One parking space;
  • Two land plots.

The lawyer involved in the scheme has been remanded in custody, with an alternative bail set at 16 million hryvnias (around $430,000). If convicted, participants face up to 12 years in prison and asset confiscation. Authorities are continuing their investigation to uncover all details and bring any additional accomplices to justice.

This case underscores the persistent issue of illegal property seizures in Ukraine and the complicity of public officials in such schemes.

A robust response from law enforcement to such crimes is crucial for building public trust in the justice system. The ongoing probe may reveal further evidence and lead to charges against other individuals, aiding efforts to combat corruption in this area.
