Chinese hackers conducted an attack on the phones of U.S. presidential candidate Donald Trump, his associate James Di Vance, and people associated with Democrat Kamala Harris. This was reported by the Associated Press, citing anonymous sources familiar with the matter.

The hackers targeted politicians from both U.S. parties and high-ranking officials in Joe Biden's administration. It is unclear what specific data might have been accessible to the hackers and what they might have obtained. Investigations are ongoing, and the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation reported that it is investigating unauthorized access to commercial telecommunications infrastructure, carried out by entities connected to the People's Republic of China.

American officials believe this attack is part of a broader cyber-espionage operation initiated by the People's Republic of China. Information on what specific data China hoped to obtain is not yet available.

A spokesperson for the Chinese embassy in Washington stated that they have no information on these attacks and cannot comment on them, but emphasized that China is also a victim of cyberattacks and opposes them. A spokesman for Trump's campaign, Steven Cheung, accused Harris’s campaign of encouraging foreign adversaries, particularly China and Iran.
