Budanov appointed head of the Presidential Office: the main mission of the new leader.
According to ТСН: The new head of the Presidential Office of Ukraine is Kyrylo Budanov, former head of Ukrainian intelligence. Experts believe that changes in this position will contribute to strengthening the military and diplomatic aspects of the country.
Political scientist Oleg Saakyan shared his thoughts on the tasks that will lie ahead for the former head of the GUR during a broadcast on 24 Channel.
The 'anti-Yermak' factor and its importance in society
Saakyan believes that Budanov's appointment is a manifestation of the critical need to choose a person with a certain authority in society to head the OPU, who is not associated with the previous leader Andriy Yermak.
In the expert's opinion, appointing a representative of the special services during wartime is a justified step.
The main negotiator with Washington
However, the main intrigue surrounding his appointment pertains to foreign policy. The political scientist believes that Budanov will essentially lead the negotiation group from the Ukrainian side.
“I think that one of the key tasks that they are counting on in terms of foreign policy is that he will become the head of the negotiation group on Ukraine's side and a key communicator, a negotiator in relation to the United States,” Saakyan noted.
The expert explains this with several reasons:
Experience: Budanov has already participated in complex negotiations, including those regarding prisoner exchanges and contacts with the Russians.
Common language: As an intelligence officer, he will be able to find common ground with American intelligence agencies and military personnel, who have a significant influence on decision-making in the USA.
“It’s not a fact that he will be a comfortable negotiator for the USA from Ukraine’s side, but he will be understandable for Americans,” Saakyan emphasized.
In Kyiv, there is hope that such “understandability” and Budanov's straightforward communication style will help unlock or expedite the resolution of critical issues with the main partner.
It is worth noting that the NYT published its version of why Zelensky chose Budanov as the new head of the OPU. Western media see this decision as an attempt by Bankova to strengthen negotiating positions with the USA and change the domestic political landscape.
Thus, the appointment of Kyrylo Budanov may be an important step for Ukraine at a difficult time when effective communications with international partners are needed. Choosing a person with experience in military and diplomatic negotiations may help strengthen our country's positions in a global context.
