Colombia refused deportation flights from the US, Trump imposed tough sanctions.
President Trump plans to take measures in response to Colombia's refusal to accept deported migrants.
President Donald Trump announced the introduction of sweeping measures against Colombia due to their refusal to accept two American military planes with deported migrants as part of new immigration rules, Reuters reports.
The Colombian president's refusal threatens US national security.
Among the measures to be introduced are a 25% tariff on Colombian goods imported to the US, which will later rise to 50%; a ban on entry and visa cancellations for Colombian government officials; financial sanctions and other measures. Additionally, Trump ordered enhanced border checks for Colombian citizens and cargo.
This is just the beginning. We will not allow the Colombian government to violate its obligations to the US.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio also commented on the situation, stating that Colombia initially agreed to accept deported individuals but later reversed that decision.
The US president declared illegal immigration a national emergency and implemented large-scale immigration restrictions last week. Furthermore, he approved military assistance to secure the border, banned asylum applications, and measures to limit citizenship for children born in the US.
The Colombian President Gustavo Petro condemned such policies and stated that deported migrants would be accepted on civilian flights. He also noted that he would not deport Americans with illegal status residing in Colombia.
It is worth noting that the US is the largest trading and investment partner of Colombia, and Colombia is the third-largest trading partner of the US in Latin America.
