Composting in Winter: How to Activate the Pile and Maintain Temperature
According to Novyny.live: Composting can continue its work even in winter if activated properly. During the winter period, compost often freezes due to the disruption of the balance between moisture, organic matter, and air access, which can negatively affect the decomposition process of materials. To activate compost, there are several natural activators that can help initiate the process.
Recommended Activators and Maintenance Techniques
Recommended activators include:
- fresh manure or poultry droppings;
- nettle or comfrey infusion;
- yeast solution with sugar.
Additionally, ready-made bioactivators can be used. It is important to maintain the correct proportions when composing the compost: one part of 'green' materials should be combined with two parts of 'brown'. This ensures optimal conditions for active organic decomposition.
To maintain the temperature and humidity of the compost pile in winter, it is recommended to turn the pile with a pitchfork every 2-3 weeks. This prevents the formation of dense layers that can hinder air access. Moreover, one should avoid overly compacting the layers and add coarse fractions to improve aeration. The moisture of the compost should be at the level of a 'wrung-out sponge'.
To protect the compost pile from the cold, it is advisable to cover it with straw, dry leaves, burlap, old blankets, or agro-textile. This helps retain heat and supports the composting process even during the winter months. With the right approach to activation and maintenance, compost can remain active and beneficial at any time of the year.
Proper composting practice in winter can be a crucial aspect for gardeners and agronomists striving to preserve ecological methods of land management. Given the growing waste issues, composting is becoming increasingly relevant, especially in the context of climate change. Utilizing natural activators and temperature maintenance techniques not only improves the quality of compost but also contributes to the sustainability of agriculture as a whole.
