Kyiv region hides billions underground: what natural resources are extracted in the region.
The Kyiv region, located in the very heart of Ukraine, is famous for its rich history, culture, and unique treasures underground. Thanks to the geological structure, which includes the Ukrainian crystalline shield and the Dnieper-Donetsk basin, a wealth of natural resources is formed here.
Building materials
One of the key resources of the region is building materials. Here, quartz and construction sand, clay, loams, and granite are extracted. The most well-known sand deposits are located in the areas of Boryspil, Brovary, and Fastiv. Granite and gneiss are actively mined in the southern part of the region, particularly in the Bohuslav and Myroniv districts.
The mentioned resources are widely used in the construction of roads, residential and industrial facilities, as well as in the production of concrete products. The extraction of these materials stimulates the development of small and medium enterprises and creates new jobs.
Peat reserves
There are still underestimated peat deposits in the Kyiv region. Peat is used as fuel, fertilizer, and raw material for insulation materials. The total peat reserves in the region exceed 40 million tons, with the largest deposits located in the northern areas.
However, peat extraction faces environmental issues, as extraction is often associated with the drying of marshes and disruption of the water balance.
Sources of drinking water
Another important resource is groundwater. In the Kyiv region, more than 100 groundwater deposits have been discovered, which are used for drinking water supply, including water from the Sosnivskyi, Boryspilskyi, and Brovary water intake facilities.
However, due to urbanization, construction, and climate change, groundwater is being depleted. Specialists call for the implementation of monitoring and regional programs for the rational use of water resources.
The Kyiv region is an important area with rich natural resources, such as building materials, peat, and groundwater. The extraction and use of these resources play a significant economic role, but they require careful and thoughtful approaches regarding their naturalness and sustainability of reserves. It is necessary to find a balance between resource exploitation and preserving the natural environment for future generations.Read also
