Corrosion, cracks, destruction: can Kyiv avoid a mass "bridgefall".
Kyiv has two old bridges over the Dnipro - Paton and Metro, which are in critical condition. Experts warn that these bridges pose a danger to people who use these transport routes.
The Paton Bridge was built in 1953, and the Metro Bridge was opened in 1965. According to engineer Dmytro Bespalov, these bridges are in the fifth operational condition, indicating their complete inoperability. Despite this, more than 100,000 vehicles cross these bridges daily.
The last inspection of the Paton Bridge, conducted in 2020, showed that some elements of the bridge are corroded by 80%. As a result, experts emphasize the need for a complete repair of the bridges. However, the problem lies in funding, as the estimated restoration of the Metro Bridge is about 500 million dollars.
The authorities plan to take some temporary measures, such as installing metal structures on the Metro Bridge and restricting heavy vehicle traffic on the Paton Bridge. However, these measures are only intended as a temporary solution to the problem.
Experts emphasize the need to develop a comprehensive strategy for the repair and operation of the bridges. They also criticize local authorities for misallocating resources to new projects instead of repairing important facilities.
The situation remains critical, and experts urge the authorities to take immediate action and transparently inform the public about the condition of the city's bridges.
