Kosovo to build ammunition factory due to rising tensions with Serbia - Media.
Kosovo has begun the construction of its first state-owned factory and laboratory for the defense industry
The Cabinet of Ministers of Kosovo announced an initiative to create a state factory for the production of ammunition and a laboratory for drone development. This was reported by Prime Minister Albin Kurti. These steps are aimed at supporting the country's defense industry. According to Reuters, Kurti also reported the establishment of a special commission to oversee the construction of the factory and laboratory.
The Prime Minister emphasized the need to develop a self-sufficient defense industry to ensure the growing production of weapons and military equipment, particularly in light of deteriorating relations with Serbia.
Defense Minister Edon Hoxhaj will head the special commission for the construction of the factory and laboratory. The project is expected to ensure full combat readiness and overall resilience of the country's army.
During his Time in office, Kurti has increased the defense budget, and in July 2023, Kosovo purchased a batch of Bayraktar drones from Turkey. NATO forces are also stationed in the country, working to maintain peace. However, the past two years have been challenging from an ethnic perspective, especially in the northern part of Kosovo.
